The tabletop gaming industry is undergoing a massive growth. Gone are the days of just playing Chutes & Ladders, Warhammer, or even Dungeons & Dragons. The library of TTRPGs and board games grows every year, and major video game franchises are getting in on the fun.

The Halo franchise is expanding into the TTRPG miniatures genre with Halo: Flashpoint. It looks and operates like a miniatures version of the popular Halo multiplayer option. The rulebook is pretty large, so it will likely take some time to get familiar with the rules. When you do, you’ll find it’s a D8-based game when it comes to combat. One of the features of the combat in Halo: Flashpoint is a headshot. Think of it like rolling a natural 20 on a d20. However, instead of just adding modifiers, you roll another d8 every time you get an 8, adding to the potential for a one-shot kill.

Additionally, movement is cube-based, meaning three-dimensional movement is foundational to the game’s mechanics. This allows players to design their maps in a seemingly endless arrangement, with numerous obstacles capable of being arranged in any number of ways.

The starter pack, which is currently available, is light on materials, but it’s an affordable introduction to the new game. Mantic, the publisher, is soon releasing a Spartan Edition that will have significantly more miniatures and materials to set up play.
