Since James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as co-CEOs of the company, the studio releases of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle performed dismally at the box office. And the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is receiving abysmal reviews at pre-screenings. It’s been a difficult few years for DC Studios.

This leads many fans to wonder when the Gunn/Safran universe of characters will begin and if any actors will remain in their roles from the DCEU to the new DCU. This week, Gunn appeared on Threads to answer a few questions on who will stay, who will go, and when his canon of films and television shows will actually begin.

“Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year -  a sort of aperitif to the DCU - & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that. It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it's okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet,” Gunn wrote.

Gunn wrote which actors are returning: "And yes, some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories & some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows and animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until CC and Legacy.”

In answering a question about Xolo Maridueña (Blue Beetle) remaining in the universe, Gunn wrote, “Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, as Viola Davis will Amanda Waller and John Cena will Peacemaker.”

Creature Commandos does not have a release date at this time but is anticipated to be released on Max in 2024. The show will be written by Gunn and Superman: Legacy, which is slated to debut on July 11, 2025.
