Matt Reeves Wants To Expand The World Around 'The Batman' Focusing On The Villains First
Alongside the release of Black Adam, DC has opened the floodgates when it comes to news about the future of its franchises. The Hollywood Reporter recently released an article jam-packed with news about the DC projects currently in the works, and amongst these projects was Matt Reeves' plan of expansion when it comes to his Batman universe.
Reeves let fans in on his initial plans of expansion with the HBO Max The Penguin and the Arkham Asylum spinoff series, director of The Batman has no intention of stopping there. With Batman having one of the best rogues galleries of comic book characters, Reeves has a surplus of villains to play with and introduce to his Gotham City. It seems that he realizes this and already has ideas for who he’d like to use next.

In the article by The Hollywood Reporter, they mention that Reeves has his eyes set on many different villains but they mention the likes of Scarecrow, Clayface, and Professor Pyg. It is also stated that Reeves is currently speaking with directors and writers for movies, on such characters. All projects are currently in very early development.
His plan to expand the universe around Batman is similar to Sony’s idea of using different characters from Spider-Man’s slew of supervillain characters, with one clear distinction between the two. Unlike Sony, Reeves and DC already have their Batman and it will be done within one universe.
As for the villains named in the article, it is extremely exciting to see the likes of Clayface and Professor Pyg brought into live action. Many thought characters like Clayface wouldn’t fit into the grounded world in which The Batman has established, yet Reeves seems to believe differently. It would be interesting to see how Matt Reeves handles a character such as Clayface, and what kind of story he builds around him.
Professor Pyg is up there for one of Batman’s creepiest villains. An interesting choice of character, although a murder mystery/slasher film about the serial killer in a pig mask would be enticing. This is a character one could definitely see within the universe already built through the film.
Then, of course, we have the Scarecrow. With the Arkham Asylum series most likely to deal with multiple villainous people, a project solely based on the deranged supervillain could spin out of the Arkham series and it could be where fans are first introduced to Reeves's version of the character. Of course, this is pure speculation, but it’s fun to dream.
Maybe, just maybe someday we’ll get a live-action bat family under filmmaker Matt Reeves.
