Gaming enthusiasts are no strangers to price increases across platforms. Xbox has announced that beginning in 2023 they intend to follow suit behind competitors such as Sony, Ubisoft, and Take-Two Interactive. These companies have already increased the prices for specific new games to $70. Sony reports that their prices may still go up from there. PlayStation 5 has increased the costs of their games in several countries and Nintendo has reported that the possibility of a price increase has not been ruled out for the Switch in the future. It is noteworthy that Microsoft has held the same price range for a steady period; $60 has been the cost for new games since the time of Xbox 360/PS3, before that they held steady at $50.

The price increase will go up from $60 to $70 for Xbox Series X/S games, including Forza Motorsport, Redfall, and Starfield. A spokesperson for Microsoft explained to IGN that the “price reflects the content, scale, and technical complexity of these titles.” When asked why the costs continue to rise, gaming companies cite that the key reasons are related to the cost of increased development and inflation trends. Microsoft reassures consumers that Game Pass will continue to be available the same day that games are launched.
