Ghost of Tsushima came out at an opportune time. The pandemic was raging across the world. PlayStation 5 was launching later that year. The game did incredibly well and was even nominated for Game of the Year, though sadly did not come away with the award.
The “sequel” was announced not too long ago, titled Ghost of Yotei, and many are eagerly awaiting the game’s release date. When the game was announced at a State of Play, it was revealed that the release date would be 2025, getting fans even more excited for the relatively short time before release.
Now, we have new information about the “sequel”, including when it takes place and what the story centers around. I use quotes around sequel because the game takes place about 300 years after the first game's events. Ghost of Tsushima took place in the 13th century amid the Mongol invasion of the Japanese island of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei will take place around 1605. This is a relatively common time period in Japanese games, as it is about 60 years after the arrival of Western missionaries and merchants. So it should be expected that Westerners will factor into the game somehow.

As for the story, it focuses on the efforts of protagonist Atsu, who is on a revenge mission against those who destroyed her homestead. The new blurb on the game’s website says that Atsu will need to gain coins from odd jobs and bounties to complete her goal, but how she “evolves” the legend of the Ghost will be up to the player. This is believed to imply that players will have more to do around the map and have greater control over Atsu’s story.
In addition to these mentions and the confirmation of a 2025 release date, the website also mentioned that new weapons, including dual-wielding swords, will be available in the new game.
