Fans of the popular anime, One Piece are jazzed that a live-action adaptation is sailing to Netflix at the end of the month. What is most exciting about this upcoming fantasy tale is the promise showrunner, Matt Owens says that the series will remain true to the roots of the original. Creator, Eiichiro Oda made sure of this as the manga artist declined to relinquish complete creative control to the streaming platform. Oda came in with specific demands. The first of which was related to the backstories of the primary characters – Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji. They were not to be changed.

Owens agreed to keep the genesis of their stories the same. He said that their origins are “so pivotal to who they are as people, what their dreams and motivations are, and how Luffy digs into that as he meets them and helps them rediscover those dreams.” The second demand from Oda was related to the powers associated with the devil fruits as that plot point was not to be changed either. One unique power, for example, gives Luffy his elastic stretchy abilities. Owens said, “Specific devil fruit powers and other skill sets were all carefully crafted by Oda and a lot of imagination went into what different people can do and what the rules are with that.”

One Piece drops on Netflix on August 31!
