Peter Jackson Opens Up About Gollum After Last Week's Huge Announcement
Last week, a new Lord of the Rings film focusing on Gollum was announced with Sir Peter Jackson as the producer and Andy Serkis as the director. Titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the new film will focus on Gollum’s perspective of events; Serkis will be reprising his role as the titular character. In an interview with Deadline, Jackson discussed Gollum as a character and a bit about what they aim to show in this new film.
Jackson opened up about the allure of the character, “The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, whilst his Sméagol side is, arguably, quite sympathetic.” The producer continued, “I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike, because there’s a little bit of both of them in all of us.”

He doesn’t explicitly outline the plot, but Jackson gave a vague idea of the upcoming content’s timeline. He explained, “We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films. It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien.” They are committed to enriching the world fans already know while staying true to the story.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently aiming for a 2026 release. It is currently in the early script-writing phase. The film will primarily be from Gollum’s perspective, revealing more on-screen information about the character and his perception of other characters.
