Producer Basil Iwanyk Confirms That 'John Wick 5' Is In Development

The story of John Wick felt like it had reached its conclusion at the end of John Wick 4. Even though it felt like the end of this character, the John Wick universe keeps expanding. There are plenty of spinoffs in the works, so fans will still get their fix, even without the titular character. While many thought it was the end of John Wick, it seems that the fifth movie may be in development after all.
During a Lionsgate earnings call, the company’s motion picture chair, Joe Drake confirmed to investors that John Wick 5 is in early development. However producer Basil Iwanyk has confirmed that while the movie is in development, the story isn’t there yet, and until it is there, it’s not something they are actively working on. With the Writers Guild of America on strike, theres not much that would get done anyway.

There was originally going to be a John Wick 5 and was going to be shot back to back with John Wick 4 but the plans changed and threw the fate of the fifth movie into question. Iwanyk produced all four John Wick movies, the Ana De Armas spinoff Ballerina and The Continental spinoff, so he wants to be careful to keep the IP balanced.

The John Wick franchise is a significant franchise for Lionsgate, and they want to keep it alive. The spinoffs are able to give a different feel to this universe that has only scratched the surface in the movies.
While John Wick 5 is still many years away yet, for now, fans can enjoy The Continental which releases this September, and Ballerina in June 2024.
