SAG-AFTRA And AMPTP Talks Likely To Continue Beyond Deadline

Having been negotiating with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers since June 7, SAG-AFTRA’s deadline could be extended beyond the date their contract runs out on June 30.

If negotiations are going well, the deadline for the talks is likely to be extended to work through the finer details of the proposals. However, if SAG-AFTRA are meeting the same sort of resistance the Writers Guild of America faced during their negotiations, the union that represents the actors and other professionals in front of the cameras could join the writers on strike from July 1.

The union has discussed some of the things they are approaching these negotiations with, such as increases in minimums, a better streaming residual formula, and protections against the use of artificial intelligence. These wants are similar to those of both the Writers Guild of America and the Directors Guild of America.

While the writers strike, the union protecting the interests of directors and other professionals behind the cameras are holding a ratification vote for the three-year contract they negotiated, with ballots due June 23. The writers have already been disrupting productions across America. The strength of those disruptions will massively increase should SAG-AFTRA join them in striking.
