'Sleeping Dogs' Movie Officially In Development, Simu Liu To Star As Wei Shen
Fans of Sleeping Dogs experienced years of false starts regarding the release of their beloved video game on the big screen, but now things seem to be progressing after Simu Liu’s latest tweet about the film.
Sleeping Dogs was first released in 2012 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC and puts players in the shoes of Wei Shen, an undercover cop working the streets of Hong Kong. Initial sales for the game were below expectations, however, the game became a cult favorite amongst fans especially the martial arts combat, high-speed chases, and compelling storytelling.
Donnie Yen was initially attached to the first screen adaptation in 2017, even putting some of his own money behind the project. But alas, the project moved into development hell as it were. Yen said to Polygon at the time, “I waited for years. Years. And I really wanted to do it. I have all these visions in my head, and unfortunately…I don’t know, you know how Hollywood goes, right?”

However, a tweet for Simu Lieu on X has fired up the fan base, and guessing he’s leading the cast list now writing: “Everyone’s overwhelming love of Sleeping Dogs here has really given us life! First a movie, then a sequel game for everyone…that’s always been the dream.”
IGN reports that Story Kitchen is taking the lead in the live-action project. The company has worked on the Sonic the Hedgehog films and the animated Tomb Raider series on Netflix.
