This Year's Razzie Award Nominations Are Out

I have a bit of a personal connection to the Golden Raspberry Awards, AKA The Razzies. Sometime around 2010, I was researching them and saw that it doesn’t take much to become a voter, so I paid the nominal fee and voila. I’ve been a Razzie voter ever since. Twice a year I get emails from the Razzies, one asking me for my nomination choices, and one asking me to vote on the actual winners. It’s a fun time because I actually get to influence the winners of an award during the season. This year was no different, and I got to throw my opinion in on what the worst of the worst for 2024 are. As per tradition, the Razzie nominees were announced one day before the Oscar nominees.

If I had to guess, the film that will take home the most awards is Joker: Folie a Deux. I haven’t seen a film series fall from grace as thoroughly as the Joker films. The first one was nominated for several Oscars, winning Score and a well-deserved Best Actor trophy for Joaquin Phoenix. Now he’s probably going to be the first actor to win an Oscar and a Razzie for the same character. It’s likely that Lady Gaga will fall victim to the hate that Joker 2 received, and will also get a Razzie to go next to her Oscar in her trophy case. If it’s not her, it will likely be Dakota Johnson for the much-maligned and mocked Madame Web. Likewise, S.J. Phillips and Todd Phillips are the frontrunners for Worst Director. I predict that the big “winners” of the night will be Joker 2 and Madame Web.
That’s not to say that other films and performances won’t be “honored.” I can see Jack Black “winning” for Borderlands, as well as the cast as a whole snagging the win for Worst Screen Couple. Either them or the leads of Joker 2.
As a final note, I will say that I am disappointed that the Razzies have done away with the “Razzie Redeemer Award” which was given to performers who were previously winners or nominees, but turned things around and starred in critical and/or commercial successes. Not sure why they got rid of that, but I wish they’d bring it back. In any case, I’m excited to get my ballot so I can help award the worst of the worst of 2024.
The Razzies are scheduled to be announced on March 1st, 2025, the day before the 97th Academy Awards.
