Though Rumours Suggest That Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy Will Retire, Other Sources Feel Differently

Every so often, we get an announcement that Kathleen Kennedy will retire from Disney. While her pre-Disney days were undoubtedly successful, co-creating Amblin Productions, which made such films as E.T., her tenure as president of Lucasfilm has sometimes been seen as controversial by the fandom. It shouldn't be forgotten, though, that George Lucas himself hand-picked Kennedy to take over the helm as the best-suited person to carry Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise forward.
Outside of a few nearly universally acclaimed projects like the first two seasons of The Mandalorian and Andor, her directing choices, making the extended universe non-canon, and tendency to make announcements for film projects never saw the light of day have caused some dissatisfaction amongst the Star Wars fandom. Despite this, the films have generally done well financially, with a roughly six billion dollar box office take. People have been calling for her to step down for years now, and every so often, we get articles about how she’s finally resigning or being fired. This latest announcement, though, has people thinking that she might actually go this time. Maybe.

In a statement to CNN, a source close to the situation says that there is “nothing there right now” in regards to her stepping down. The initial report was that Kennedy would step down at the end of 2025, when her contract expired. However, if the source speaking to CNN is correct, then the internet has been fooled once again. Neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have made comments about the rumors.
It remains to be seen what comes of Star Wars in the coming years. A movie hasn’t come out since 2019, and while several have been announced since then, there isn’t anything concrete. While we have to wait for this latest rumor to be fully confirmed or denied, it will be interesting to see where Star Wars goes from here should Kennedy step away.
