The last few years have seen a major resurgence for the long-running Ultraman franchise. As Japan’s legendary tokusatsu hero inches closer to its 60th anniversary in 2026, the franchise has seen both an anime adaptation at Neftlix in 2019 from Production I.G. and Sola Digital Arts and a live-action film, “Shin Ultraman”, from legendary animator, director and tokusatsu enthusiast Hideaki Anno in 2022. This year, Netflix has teamed up with Tsubuyara Productions once again to produce a new reimagining of the iconic red-and-silver giant and his story with the animated film Ultraman: Rising.

The synopsis for the film reads: “With Tokyo under siege from rising monster attacks, baseball star Ken Sato reluctantly returns home to take on the mantle of Ultraman. But the titanic superhero meets his match when he is forced to adopt a 35-foot-tall, fire-breathing baby kaiju. Sato must rise above his ego to balance work and parenthood while protecting the baby from forces bent on exploiting her for their own dark plans.”
