'The Legend Of Vox Machina' Season 3 Episodes 1-3 Spoiler-Free Review

Vox Machina

Critters rejoice! Season 3 of The Legend Of Vox Machina is finally here. This season will have Vox Machina all over the place to defeat Thordak and the Chroma Conclave once and for all. Fans are in for a wild ride because this seems to be the most depressing season yet, but some romance, spice, and humor are sprinkled in.

In the three episodes, a lot happened. They are confronted by Raishan, a dragon who can transform into a human. She informs them of another vestige that is needed to destroy Thordak. They must travel to the city of Ank’Harel in Marquet to retrieve it. This is one of the most gorgeous pieces of animation I have ever seen. It’s extremely colorful and makes me wish I could visit it in real life. Of course, their plan to steal the vestige doesn’t go as planned, as a familiar face steals it. Some party members get split up for various reasons, but they all come back together by the end. They later find out that the stolen vestige was a copy and that the real vestige is in a place no one ever wants to go. Vox Machina must go to the Hells to retrieve the real vestige, or as Grog likes to call them, vesticles. Their party is split, and both sides are having their issues.

One of my favorite parts from the first three episodes is all the easter eggs and callbacks to their other campaigns. We see a wooden house created by the campaign's three master craftsmen, Chetney Pock O’Pea. When Scanlan visits his daughter, one of her fellow musicians sings a familiar song about the Ruby Of The Sea, who fans will know as Jester Lavorre’s mother from the second campaign. Matt Mercer voices the character, and he also sings the song in the credits. It’s an absolute bop. There was even a callback to their Calamity campaign with a certain character name. In the first episode, Percy says, “One can certainly try,” which is a very familiar saying to Critters. There was also a small appearance from Ronin, Travis Willingham, and Laura Bailey’s child. He played one of the kids that Grog encounters. It’s also fun to point out the various Matt Mercer-looking characters in the show. All of these easter eggs are fun little additions to the show.

The cast has said that this will be the saddest season to date, and from what we’ve seen so far, they’re right. None of these characters are good when it comes to romance, and we see that firsthand when it comes to Vax’ildan and Keyleth and Percy and Vex’ahlia. Fans know how each of these couples ends up, and, unfortunately, only one of them has a happy ending. Keyleth and Vax deny their feelings for each other because, during their kiss, Vax saw Keyleth alone in front of the grave of her friends. Percy and Vex shared a night but refused to acknowledge it, especially in their line of work. Even though most fans know what happens, it’s still heartbreaking to see it play out.

This season so far has been amazing between the animation and the music. Each season gets better and better when it comes to animation, but Ank’Harel is my favorite place that has been animated so far. It’s just gorgeous. Thordak is still voiced by the late Lance Reddick, and there is a nice dedication to him at the end.  If the previous seasons are anything to go on, this season will just continue to get better, even though the third episode ended with a split party, something that is never a good idea.

Rating: 8/10
