An Upcoming LOTR Documentary Will Showcase The Legacy Of The Films

Vice News are dropping a docu-series comprised of six forty-five-minute episodes about the legacy of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The last show airs on Wednesday 24th April 2024. Believe it or not, The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring is twenty-three years old. Icons Unearthed: The Lord of The Rings goes back in time to reflect on the unique way these films were made and received.
Before Peter Jackson brought the books to life, Tolkien’s work wasn’t popular in the mainstream, although it did have an avid following of fantasy readers. Viggo Mortenson famously had not read the books. His eleven-year-old son persuaded him to sign up for the role of Aragorn when he was recruited as a last-minute replacement for Stuart Townsend, who was originally cast as the would-be King.

Icons Unearthed: The Lord of The Rings contains a host of new interviews. Producer Barrie Osborne (Face-Off, The Matrix) and actor Jed Brophy (Nori from The Hobbit movies) give great tell all accounts of what it was like behind the scenes. Makeup and hair designer Peter “Swords” King (Into the Woods, The Little Mermaid, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) go into detail about how Tolkien’s creatures were brought to life.
Between the four films, the series racked up an impressive seventeen Oscar wins, and with more material being made all the time, the franchise is still going strong. The documentary can be viewed on the Vice website.
