Legendary Entertainment’s newest project has been revealed, and it’ll be a pretty big one. Legendary will be teaming up with Hasbro Entertainment, the production company owned by American toy company Hasbro, to create a cinematic universe centered around the highly successful card game Magic: The Gathering. The plans are reportedly for live-action content at this time. As the general project is still in its early stages, specific details have not been given, but it will be something to keep an eye on in the future.

The Chairman of Worldwide Production for Legendary, Mary Parent, commented on the upcoming collaboration from the company’s side (via Deadline), “We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than MAGIC: THE GATHERING. Alongside the fantastic Hasbro team, we look forward to creating a multimedia universe that thrills longstanding fans and creates a broad wave of new ones.”

The Head of Films under Hasbro Entertainment, Zev Foreman, also made a statement: “This is an exciting and complementary partnership, uniting one of the world’s most iconic brands with a powerful and proven steward. MAGIC: THE GATHERING has inspired decades of epic world-building and creative storytelling. It is a perfect match for Legendary’s diversified approach to marquee IP, and we are excited to work together to build a whole new MAGIC: THE GATHERING universe.” Both companies are going into this deal with the goal of creating something unique and enjoyable for a variety of audiences in the MTG universe.

Magic: The Gathering was created by Doctor Richard Garfield and acquired by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. It is a trading card game in which the player takes on the persona of a magic being called a Planeswalker, according to lore, though there is variety in gameplay. Each player has their own deck, and the most common way to win a game is to take your opponent’s health down from 20 to zero. In 2022, the title pulled through to become Hasbro’s first $1 billion brand. While it is a card game, it has branched out to digital platforms as well, including Magic Online (2002) and MTG Arena (2019).
