'Superman: Legacy' Screen Testing Includes Several Familiar Faces
First introduced to print in 1938, Superman has been through many lives; different faces, stories, timelines (canon and alternate), and experiences ranging from the miracle of life to death and rebirth. He truly has earned the moniker “The Man of Steel.” With the famous Henry Cavill hanging up the cape, a new face is needed to fill the renowned superhero’s shoes. While “Superman: Legacy” is scheduled to appear in theaters on July 11, 2025, fans are already eager to know who will be Superman and Lois Lane respectively, and what James Gunn will do.
As the new director for the upcoming film, James Gunn has “put [himself] in the position to set up his new DCU in whatever way he can.” This includes having a hand in who will be cast as he would have an understanding of which actors will work best with him and his script. Currently, Gunn will have to decide between Emmy-winning Rachel Brosnahan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Phoebe Dynevor, who played Lady Daphne Bridgerton in the first season of Bridgerton, and Emma Mackey, best known as Maeve in the first three seasons of Sex Education. With screen testing reportedly being more intimate and small, it comes to reason that the pool of actors testing the role of Clark Kent/Superman is as selective.

The three actors who have the chance to be the new Man of Steel are former actor Nicholas Hoult, Pearl's David Corenswet, and Greyhound's Tom Brittney. Out of the three, Hoult has had more appearances in film, including within the X-Men franchise as Beast, and thus has prior experience in heroic settings. Meanwhile, his counterparts are most known for supporting roles (Corenswet) and experience in television than in film. Within their television role, both Corenswet and Brittney have the potential to handle the task of being the new Man of Steel. It’s only a matter of time until Superman and Lois Lane appear to face whatever might be near.
