Toho Announce New 'Godzilla' Film, With Director Of 'Godzilla Minus One' Returning
Right on the heels of his success with Godzilla Minus One, director Takahashi Yamazaki is set to not only direct but also write and steer VFX for a new Godzilla film that has yet to be titled. The title was announced as part of an “Emergency Announcement” on Toho’s X feed. No further details other than Yamazaki’s involvement were revealed, including if the film would be a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One, but they did promise that further details will follow soon.
Godzilla Minus One grossed over $116 million worldwide and won Yamazaki the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects earlier this year against titles such as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Napoleon and The Creator. It is set in the aftermath of WWII. Japan, already struggling with economic and social hardship, gets an even more devastating threat: Godzilla. The radioactive lizard wreaks havoc across the already damaged landscape, and it is up to Kōichi Shikishima (played by Ryunosuke Kamiki), a former kamikaze pilot who has his own demons to fight, to stop Godzilla’s destruction. This film stands apart from other takes of the series from studios such as Legendary or Warner Brothers.
