New Book Has Mon Mothma Take On Emperor Palpatine
The release of a new Star Wars novel trilogy is well on its way! The series, Star Wars: Reign of the Empire, will be set during the Empire’s formative years and told from a newer perspective. The Mask of Fear is the first book of the series. Written by Alexander Freed, it will explore the first year of the Empire “told through the eyes of Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and Saw Gerrera.”
As the official book description reads, “During that terrifying first year of tyranny, Mon Mothma, Saw Gerrera, and Bail Organa face the encroaching darkness. One day, they will be three architects of the Rebel Alliance. But first, each must find purpose and direction in a changing galaxy, while harboring their own secrets, fears, and hopes for a future that may never come unless they act.” Television is rich in early Rebellion content; Andor shows the developing Rebellion and Star Wars Rebels shows a different perspective of the Rebellion coming together as a more concerted effort, but neither fully shows how the Rebellion and its key figures got to where they are.

This new book will establish a solid foundation for how the characters built their networks and got to their positions. It heavily features Mon Mothma, the Galactic Senate Representative of Chandrila, giving a new perspective to the character as she begins to politically take on the Emperor. An exclusive excerpt of the book from Entertainment Weekly highlights Mothma’s thoughts behind her actions, “He’s not giving power back to ordinary people. He’s only shifting who holds it. He and his cronies don’t care about your world any more than they care about mine.”
The Mask of Fear will be released on February 25, 2025. It will be published by Random House Worlds, the imprint behind several other canon Star Wars novels. The second and third books remain untitled at this time; Rebecca Roanhorse’s installment is expected in the Spring of 2026, and Fran Wilde’s installment is expected in the Spring of 2027.
